Anatomy and Physiology is a Level 3 subject, usually taken as part of a therapy or health-related course. It is not a GCSE, and each course is run by its own awarding body, so the exam format can differ. This guide covers what the course usually involves, the body systems to revise, study tips and where to practise.

What the exam involves

Check your course provider for the exact exam format, timing, pass mark and unit code, as these vary by awarding body and centre. The IPassPro practice test has 50 multiple-choice questions, which gives a good idea of the style of question you will meet.

Body systems to revise

Most courses cover the main body systems and how they work together. For each system, make sure you can name the main structures, describe what they do and explain how they link to the others.

  • Skeletal system: bones, joints and their functions
  • Muscular system: types of muscle and how they move the body
  • Circulatory system: the heart, blood vessels and blood
  • Respiratory system: the lungs and the process of breathing
  • Digestive system: the organs of digestion and absorption
  • Nervous system: the brain, spinal cord and nerves
  • Endocrine system: the glands and the hormones they release
  • Integumentary system: the skin, hair and nails

Study tips

  • Learn the key terms for each system, and practise spelling them correctly.
  • Draw and label diagrams from memory, then check them against your notes.
  • Link each structure to its function, as multiple-choice questions often test this link.
  • Practise under timed conditions so the pace of the real exam feels familiar.
