Diet and Nutrition is a Level 3 certificate for complementary therapists, offered by VTCT Skills (ITEC). It is listed on the UK Register of Regulated Qualifications at Level 3, and it is approved for funding until 31 July 2027. This guide covers how the qualification is assessed, the topics to revise, portfolio tips and where to practise.

How the qualification is assessed

The qualification has two parts. The first is a multiple-choice test of 25 questions, and the IPassPro practice test follows this format. The second is a portfolio of five client case studies, with four consultations recorded for each one.

Check with VTCT Skills or your training provider for the exact timing, pass mark and submission dates.

Topics to revise

  • Nutrients and their functions: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water
  • The main food groups and healthy eating guidance
  • Energy balance and how to assess a client’s diet
  • Dietary needs, and how to adapt advice for different clients
  • Keeping accurate, professional records of consultations

Portfolio tips

  • Plan your five case studies early, so each one has room for four consultations.
  • Record each consultation in full, including the client’s goals, the advice given and the outcome.
  • Keep client details confidential in all of your records.
