GCSE Chemistry resits: summer 2027 dates
This guide covers the summer 2027 series. Ask your school or exam board whether any earlier series is available for GCSE Chemistry.
GCSE Chemistry resits in summer 2027
Exams for the summer 2027 series run in May and June 2027, and results are due in August 2027. Your school or college makes the entries for you, so ask them for the entry deadline as early as you can and check which tier you will sit.
Under the AQA specification (8462), GCSE Chemistry has two papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks. Paper 1 covers topics 1 to 5: atomic structure and the periodic table, bonding and the properties of matter, quantitative chemistry, chemical changes, and energy changes. Paper 2 covers topics 6 to 10: the rate and extent of chemical change, organic chemistry, chemical analysis, the chemistry of the atmosphere, and using resources. Each paper counts for half of the final grade.
How to prepare for the resit
Start with a practice test, then focus on the topics where you scored lowest. Chemistry questions often combine a calculation with a reaction or a practical method, so practise both the working and the explanation.
Quantitative chemistry is worth returning to often, because calculations such as moles and amounts from balanced equations appear across many topics. Show each step of your working, as marks are often given for the method even when the final answer is wrong.
Because the summer 2027 series is the resit window covered here, find out early whether your school is entering you at foundation or higher tier. Your teacher can advise which tier is right for you.
